This picture of Charis nude was taken at Doug Short's cabin at Big Sur in January of the last year Edward and Charis were married. Historically, it is related to his Prologue to a Sad Spring, which showed Margrethe Mather, dressed, standing on one side, among soft and rounded tree shadows on a barn wall (figure 52/1920). The photograph Weston made in 1920 is considerably more tranquil and reflects more admiration for Japanese design than this one, which is largely dependent on the brilliance of the light and the disjointed and spotty effects it creates.
